AFRA & TOBIA SCARPA for GAVINA, Italy 1962
The Bastiano is one of the great Italian postwar designs — and one of the least complicated. Afra and Tobia Scarpa created it for Gavina in 1962, later produced by Knoll, and the idea is deceptively simple: generous cushions in cognac leather, suspended from a satin-black wooden frame so that they appear to float above the ground. There are no unnecessary gestures. The proportions are wide and low, the leather is Italian and supple, and the whole thing sits with the kind of quiet authority that only comes from being genuinely well-designed. The cognac leather and satin-black frame is the classic colourway — and in a room, it earns its keep every day.
