#172 Chrome and Black Leather Lounge Chair — Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin, 1970s

A$3,650.00

Milo Baughman was Thayer Coggin’s sole designer for fifty years — a partnership begun with a handshake in 1953, ended only with his death in 2003. That sustained relationship is visible in the work: coherent, confident, and never chasing a brief.

These barrel chairs date from the early-to-mid 1970s, when Baughman was working most freely with chrome flat-bar steel — treating it less like hardware and more like drawing lines in space. The welded frame does real structural work while appearing to do almost none, giving the barrel form its characteristic sense of suspension.

Baughman drew early inspiration from the glamour of Hollywood film sets — bold proportions, nothing superfluous. That sensibility is clear here: the barrel form wraps generously around the sitter, the tufted cushions add old-Hollywood theatricality, and the chrome finish makes the pieces feel alive in a room.

The leather is black, in very good condition with the soft patina of genuine age. The chrome is excellent — welds clean, finish well held. Mid-century modern chrome and leather chairs at their best.

Priced and sold individually. Two available.
