#170 Kubus Lounge Chair — Josef Hoffmann for Wittmann, Austria 1970s
JOSEF HOFFMANN for WITTMANN, Austria 1970s
Josef Hoffmann designed the Kubus in 1910 — one of the most radical chairs of the 20th century. At a time when Art Nouveau was still the dominant decorative language, Hoffmann stripped everything back to geometry: a pure cube of tufted leather, with the button grid arranged as precisely as a grid on graph paper. It was decades ahead of its time, and when Wittmann began producing authorised editions in the 1970s, the design lost nothing in translation. The proportions are exactly right — wide, deep, genuinely enveloping — and the black leather on this pair is in outstanding vintage condition, supple and unmarked. A chair that looks equally at home in a Viennese villa or a contemporary Melbourne apartment.
