VICO MAGISTRETTI for CASSINA, Italy c.2000

Vico Magistretti designed the Maralunga in 1973, and it won the Compasso d'Oro the following year — not for how it looked, though it does look beautiful, but for the mechanism: the headrests raise for reading or watching television, then fold flat when you want a cleaner profile. Cassina has kept it in continuous production ever since. This two-seater is upholstered in burgundy wool-alpaca velvet — a warm, rich tone — and has been newly reupholstered to a very high standard. At 170 centimetres it is a compact two-seater with the full Maralunga presence.
