Vico Magistretti designed the Maralunga in 1973, and it won the Compasso d'Oro the following year — not because it looked extraordinary, though it does, but because of the mechanism. The adjustable headrests can be raised for reading or watching television, then folded flat for a cleaner profile. It was a genuinely new idea, and Cassina has kept it in production ever since because nothing has superseded it. This example is in burgandy-coloured velvet — a warm, rich tone that works beautifully with timber, stone, or dark walls — and is in excellent condition. At 240 centimetres wide it's a genuinely generous three-seater. One of the most important Italian sofas of the 20th century, and one of the most liveable.
