Maralunga Three-Seater Sofa in Cream — Vico Magistretti for Cassina, Italy
Maralunga Three-Seater Sofa in Cream — Vico Magistretti for Cassina, Italy
VICO MAGISTRETTI for CASSINA, Italy
Vico Magistretti designed the Maralunga in 1973, and it took the Compasso d'Oro, Italy's highest design prize, a few years later. The idea is simple: the backrest folds over on itself. Leave it down and the sofa sits low and lounging. Flip the headrests up and you have a high back to lean your head against. Half a century on, Cassina still makes it.
This three-seater is upholstered in a soft cream, a fine rib that catches the light and gives the pale colour some texture rather than letting it go flat. The arms curl over like rolled cushions, and the whole thing sits on flat legs that make the sofa look as though it is floating.
It's a sofa that looks quiet in a room and is very hard to get up from.
